About Us
Founded in 1962, Birmingham Dance Theatre, Inc. was formed to offer students an environment where they are capable of receiving personal attention in a demanding yet enjoyable atmosphere.
The BDT Performing Company is a non-profit organization, which provides a training ground for serious dancers. Many former students have eventually moved to cities with more opportunity in cultural arts in the US and abroad to pursue their dreams.
Joni Scofield is the owner and artisitic director of BDT. She took over the studio from her mother Nora Nash and has even further developed a tradition of disciplined hard work with a family friendly atmosphere.
We are both blessed and fortunate to have an outstanding team of instructors. Our current faculty consist of 18 professionals based locally, L.A. and NY.
BDT is located at 100 Olde Towne Road, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216. You are welcome to call 205-822-3012 or come by to see what we are up to. Click to Contact Us.
The three most important things to keep in mind:
- Passion - We love dance!!! Everyday we offer you an uncompromising dedication to inspiring artistic growth and developing specific skill sets in various genres of dance. From the beginner to professional, our objective is to provide you the right combination of professionalism, creativity, technique, discipline, inspiration, musicality & fun! We are a nationally known, well-respected school with a family friendly atmosphere.

- Commitment - From the instructors we hire to our facilities, we want you to have as many possibilities to learn and grow in the world of dance. BDT has a state of the art building with 6 spacious studios including a small theatre. Each studio has a suspended floor with marley flooring, viewing windows & updated lighting and sound.
- Family - Since 1957 BDT has been helping girls and boys grow and develop. In fact, we have many children of BDT alumni dancing with us and we are proud of that. In the past 50+ years, we have had many BDT dancers go on to LA and New York to become professional dancers and some of our alumni have become dance instructors and opened their own studios. Our honest feeling is it doesn't matter if you become a professional dancer, Junior Miss Alabama or a dance instructor, if you love to dance you are welcome into our family.
