Birmingham Dance Theatre
Founded in 1962
Birmingham Dance Theatre, Inc. was formed to offer students an environment where they are capable of receiving personal attention in a demanding yet enjoyable atmosphere.
Joni Scofield is the owner and artistic director of BDT. She took over the studio from her mother Nora Nash and has even further developed a tradition of disciplined hard work with a family atmosphere.
From the instructors we hire to our facilities, we want you to have as many possibilities to learn and grow in the world of dance. BDT has a state of the art building with 6 spacious studios including a small theatre. Each studio has a suspended floor with marley flooring, viewing windows & updated lighting and sound.
Classes offered at Birmingham Dance Theatre
For little ones ages 2-4, we provide an excellent introduction to dance in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. We offer several options for this age group.
Ballet class is a classical dance form that incorporates grace and precision of movement. Ballet class focuses on overall body alignment and awareness
Jazz classes at BDT explode with energy! With music styles ranging from hip-hop to show tunes, the beat alone will get you moving. Jazz classes encourage expression of individual style and originality.
Lyrical class is designed for intermediate to advanced students with previous training in ballet.
Contemporary is a style of dance that uses the emotion and mood of the music to elicit movements from the dancers.
HIP - HOP
One of the highest energy, versatile styles of dance. Hip Hop uses your own personal rhythm, as well as current dance moves.
A style of dance using special shoes to create different rhythms and sounds. Tap is great for developing musicality and coordination skills.
Acrobatics teaches strength, flexibility, and tumbling. Gymnastics skills include walkovers, limbers, handsprings, and more.
Dance with the best!
With 54 years of dance education. Birmingham Dance Theatre is devoted to properly train aspiring individuals of all ages to excel in each genre of dance. Our purpose is to nurture, educate, guide and encourage all students to develop their personal best.
"We started with summer camps and moved into tap/ballet and tumbling this fall. I've been so impressed with the entire BDT staff and how well they teach their littlest dancers while still making class so much fun. Our daughter refers to all of her teachers by name and thoroughly enjoys practicing and showing off her new "tricks" and skills at home."
"I would like to say a special thank you to Joni Nash Scofield, the entire staff at Birmingham Dance Theatre, all of the dancers and also the volunteers. We attended A's recital in the morning and then returned to watch the showcase that evening. The choreography, the dancers, and presentation were extraordinary. Matthew and I both would like to say thank you and we are so glad we picked such a wonderful dance studio!"
STACY LEE HECKATHORN RICHARDS
"This is our first year at BDT and we love it so far! My daughter is 2 and I must admit I was skeptical the first week because the children were just running around. However, Joni and the other instructors have taught the kids discipline and the girls are really starting to actually learn dance moves! They are so cute to watch! I can't wait for the recital!!!"
My daughter has taken at Birmingham Dance Theatre going on 3 years. BDT has provided her with the highest quality dance training available in the Birmingham area with a heavy focus on mastering technique and dance terminology. Discipline, self confidence and teamwork are a constant focus during class which help prepare students for everyday life challenges. I highly recommend BDT to anyone looking for a healthy environment of proper dance training.
